Import CSV to SharePoint Step by Step

Importing CSV files to SharePoint

We are adding lot of features to this application. We can modify it to cater for your specific you needs. Please contact us for more information.

SpCsvImport will import data and attachments into SharePoint Custom Lists. If you need to import into other part of SharePoint please contact us as we can assist.

Steps

  • Create a custom list in a SharePoint website
  • Add any additional fields you need to store values
  • Provide detail to provide a connection to the SharePoint server
    • Domain - Microsoft Windows active directory domain name
    • Username - A user name with access to read write to the SharePoint Custom List
    • Password - Password
    • Site URL - URL to the SharePoint website that contains the custom list
    • List Name - name of the custom list you wish to import to
  • Under Csv File Path specify or browse to a CSV file containing the data including the names of attachments you want to import into your SharePoint Custom List. The first row of the CSV file must contain column headers. These headers describe the content in each column. For more information on the CSV file format see here.
  • Under Map File Path you can leave this blank for now as SpCsvImport will automatically create a CSV Map file of the same name as the CSV file but the non extension part appended with -map. I.e. If you specify a CSV file called mycsvfile.csv on closing the SpCsvImport program a file will be created and saved called mycsvfile-map.csv. This map file contains the mapping of fields from the CSV to SharePoint Custom List.
  • Specify mapping of the CSV Columns
    • To define to mapping for a column double click the appropriate column item in the CSV Column To SharePoint Custom List Field Mapping list. This will display the mapping form. In the mapping form you can specify the output field name and type.
    • Repeat this for each column you want to export. For column you do not want to export do not define a value or select -
    • For a column that contains attachment names (caters for either one attachment file name or multiple attachment file names separated by a semi colon delimiter ";"
  • If you have any Date Time fields you are exporting you need to specify the input (CSV file) and output (SharePoint server) date format d/MM/YYY, MM/d/yyyy or yyyy/MM/d. Because the information is passed as text and read into a date variable via a string it need to know the order or the date parts. Sometimes the server (SharePoint) may have a different date format to the client for instance.
  • Click Import to start the importing of the CSV file to SharePoint. Click Cancel to cancel the import.
  • A log file is generated each time. You can view the log file by clicking Open Log Folder. The log file are text files and are time stamped and names Log YYYY-MM-DD HH_MM.txt. If any errors occur they are listed in the log file.
